We are pleased to (finally) announce the winners of our City Fresh Market contests and also reveal the answers to the pictures. If you remember, way back before the winter holiday hiatus, the Local Beet and City Fresh Market had two $25 gift cards to give away. One card went via a random drawing to one of seven people who commented “house-made”. The other card went to the person who successfully identified the most pictures of house-made items at City Fresh.

  • “esp” won the drawing.
  • John Wilson identified the most photo’s.

We have contacted both individuals through the emails they used to comment. John Wilson identified three of the four items below, only missing the cake. Wilson identified it as “Boem cake”. We were looking for dobos torte–we felt the burnt caramel topping helped distinguish this as dobos torte. We have identified all pictures below.

Burek

Burek, sometimes spelled borek, is a filled pastry, probably of Turkish origin. Bureks are most commonly made with thin layers of dough such as phyllo dough. Common fillings include spinach, feta cheese and ground meat. Bureks very popular in Balkan cuisines.

Dobos Torte

Dobos torte is is a Hungarian cake named after its inventor, a well-known Hungarian baker, József C. Dobos (1847–1924). It is a five-layer sponge cake, layered with chocolate buttercream and topped with thin caramel slices.

Stuffed Cabbage or Sarma

Also of Turkish origin, sarma is a dish of ground meat and rice (or sometimes just seasoned rice) wrapped inside a cabbage, grape or Swiss chard leaf. The cabbage leaves used for sarma are often pickled and City Fresh pickles its cabbage for sarma in house.

Cevap–we would have taken several spellings

Cevap or cevapi are kebabs made of ground meat found very traditionally in the countries of southeastern Europe. They are considered a national dish in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria and Serbia.

Thanks everyone for participating, and please take advantage of all the house-made items at City Fresh, especially now that you know the names of some.
