Building A Healthier Chicago, a collaborative group of more than 150 local and national Stakeholders with their Executive Leadership Committee consistingof the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services – Region V, the Chicago Department of Public Health, the Institute of Medicine of Chicago, and the Chicago Medical Society rolled out their F.I.T. City Inititative last Monday.

The mission of F.I.T. City is to partner Building a Healthier Chicago with restaurants, chefs, culinary schools, health advocates, and community groups to develop and promote F.I.T. (Fresh, Innovative, Tasty) menu options that will increase the number of highly nutritious choices offered to Chicago diners, serving as a critical component of a healthy living model.

What is the goal? The choices we make are shaped by the choices we have, and in our society, we are bombarded with unhealthy choices. In efforts to combat this issue, the F.I.T. City Initiative seeks to support establishments as local community cornerstones in food, nutrition, and health. F.I.T. City establishments will embrace the health of their customers by consistently providing Fresh, Innovative, and Tasty (F.I.T.) menu items that are balanced and nutritious, yet still affordable, delicious, and craveable. Since “healthy” menu items often imply a lack of flavor F.I.T. City entrees will emphasize fresh, seasonal ingredients and innovative preparation styles that contribute to making dishes tasty.

Any restaurant, or food service establishment is invited to be a member of the program. They will advertise your designation as a F.I.T. City establishment on their website! You’ll be part of something bigger, a chance to provide Chicagoland residents with more opportunities to live healthier lives. It’s free!
