Thank Country, Get a Bag, Kickoff Market Season – Daley Plaza, May 12

Careful readers of the Local Beet know this, but just in case, the depth and extent of the Chicago Farmer Market system–something rather to admire–comes as the result of many hard workers including now part timer, David Rand, but also through the financial support of COUNTRY (don’t you dare spell it any other way) Financial.  Recently, the City of Chicago and COUNTRY inked a deal, assuring COUNTRY’S support of the markets through 2013.

Something else COUNTRY does with the markets and with the City is sponsor a contest at Chicago high schools to design a reusable bag.  This Thursday, May 12, the City and its friend, COUNTRY, will kick off market season at Daley Plaza.  They will also reveal the winner of their fourth Reusable Bag Design Contest  at 11am.  The winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship in addition to having his or her design displayed on 10,000 reusable shopping bags that will be distributed at farmers markets throughout the city this summer.  Two runners-up will each receive a $500 scholarship.  This year’s finalists include Brogan Faso of Lincoln Park High School, David Lopez of Steinmetz Academic Centre and Nevin Sanchez of Mather High School.

The Daley Plaza market features some treats not generally found at other markets including a wide array of Amish goods from Indiana.  It mixes in several fruit and vegetable vendors with candy, jarred sauces, and lunch offerings.  It should be a regular Thursday stop for you all, but it should be an especially vital stop for you this Thursday to celebrate a new season, get your market bag, and thank COUNTRY for their financial support.
