We named Xoco the Local Beet Restaurant of the Year for bringing our kind of foods to the lunch masses.  Now, our Year in Local post has gone over a month delinquent, do you think we would ever post about the top locavore restaurant of the aughts?  We should have.  We need to jump on board, because not only has Vie recently won a Chicago Jean Banchet award for Best Fine Dining, it was named one of the top forty restaurants in the USA by Gayot!  Hey, we love Vie too.

We loved the recent beef dinner.  In the middle of a crazy week cooking for 50 that morphed into cooking for 150, we took time off to attend Vie’s first farm dinner with 28 day dry aged beef from Dietzler Farm.  It was a typical Vie meal combing various chapters from the Joy of Cooking, including, in January, the one on outdoor smoking.  Of course the chapter  on preserving is well covered, and the dishes often featured Vie’s well known interplays of sweet and piquant canned foods.  Mostly, the meal matched the generosity and ease that more than anything would be Vie’s hallmark.  Wanna know more, our pal Ronnie “Suburban” Kaplan captured it well.

Yeah, yeah, Vie’s known for this, known for that. award here, award there.  Does not mean they are taking a nap.  As also noted on LTHForum, they have a new bar menu.  If they created a beef dinner for the people, they’ve gone all elitist on us with a truffle extravaganza in February.  Yet, to counter any charges, they have their Sunday suppers, the next on February 7, with family friendly pricing and menu’s.  Note, this week’s Sunday supper starts at noon so Chef Virant can get to his Super Bowl party.

More?  Sharing his commitment to local foods with us all, Vie sits as a drop-off location for a CSA.  This will be the third season Vie has been a pick-up spot for fresh from the farm produce, meats, eggs, and cheese.  Pickups at Vie are Fridays 11:00 AM to 2:00PM.  Sign up for weekly or bi-weekly shares.   Details here.
