I'm trying to find a steady source for local dairy — milk, half&half, butter… Any recommendations? I've found milk via Peapod, and Eggnog at Dominics, but not half&half, nor butter. And I don't spend enough to make Peapod a consistent source anyway.

Hi there, I have a couple ideas for you.
Natural Direct serves Lake County and delivers local and organic dairy from a variety of sources.

Also, have you tried Sunset Foods? I haven't checked their aisles recently, but I would be surprised if they didn't carry Organic Valley's line of dairy, which are certified organic and from local farmers. (You can also find Organic Valley at Whole Foods and usually in some regular markets as well).

Let us know what you find.
Best,
Michael

Thanks! We've used Natural Direct in the past, but since the dairy was typically low pasturization it tended to sour before we finished it. I hadn't thought of Sunset — we went there last night, and they did have Organic Valley for both milk and half&half, as well as Grass Point for milk.

We went to Garden Fresh Markets this weekend. It had both Organic Valley and Grass Pointe Farms in milk, Organic Valley in butter, cream cheese, and stick cheese, and Grass Point in a montery jack cheese. Neither for half&half though, unfortunately.

Did they have heavy cream? Because, if you've got cream and you've got milk, then you've got half-and-half.

It's expensive ($150 per year just for an admin fee, plus the cost of the products), but Blue Marble Family Farm does home delivery to Lake County (as well as Chicago and elsewhere). They've got their farm's outstanding milk, cream, half-and-half, buttermilk, and yogurt, plus butter and cheese from nearby Wisconsin producers.

Definitely on the pricey side! If we had kids (just two of us don't consume milk that fast) I'd be tempted though.
