The quest to eat local runs through some pretty good ice creams.  Go a bit north and there's Sibby's from Wisconsin; head the other way and there's Trader's Point Creamery from Indiana.  Right smack here in Chicago there's a couple of great gals making ice creams.  Today, let's talk about Ruth & Phil's.  Not only do the people behind Ruth and Phil's sell their ice cream at the winter markets, they make their ice creams from ingredients found at the winter markets.

Last night we needed a bit extra food after chicken salad and winter salad.  Luckily, we had some R&C cinnamon honey Buffalo Trace bourbon carrot ice cream.  The winter carrots give the ice cream a texture approaching grit but, really in a good way.  The mix of several strong flavors (see list above) makes it all come together.  It's not the type of ice cream to head pint-first into after a break-up or something, but ice cream to enjoy in a small, intense scoop (or two).

Tell us about the local ice creams you love.

never tried Ruth & Phil's but the claim on their website that the ice cream is lower fat and sugar makes me a skeptic.  Had Sibby vanilla yesterday for the first time, and it was good.  I'd love to say it's as good as very non-local Haagen Daz, but I'm afraid that's not the case.  Maybe the local ice creams shine better with fruit flavors, but I've yet to find local vanilla ice cream that's on par with HD vanilla.
