The tree above is a yellow buckeye that I saw at The Morton Arboretum. “The yellow buckeye is a rugged beauty, with its thick bark, interesting yellow spring blooms and striking orange fall color. In parks and yards, it serves as an attractive and dense shade tree suitable as a pleasing focal point or a visual screen. But where does the word “buckeye” come from? This tree actually gets its name from the whitish scar found on each brown seed. It is said to give the seed the appearance of a deer’s eye.” (From Arborday.org)  The Ohio Buckeye tree (part of the Buckeye family of trees), the tree species Aesculus glabra is commonly known as Ohio buckeyeAmerican buckeye, or fetid buckeye. Glabra is one of 13–19 species of Aesculus also called horse chestnuts. So if you didn’t know, now you know what a buckeye is. However, buckeyes are poisonous and not the same as edible chestnuts. The Morton Arboretum is particularly beautiful in the fall when the leaves change color and where you can go full-blown tree nerding out.

Peppers are in season, get them while you can from mild, like shishito, poblano or banana, to full out hot like habaneros. Nichols Farm had all of these peppers and more at their stand. Grapes are making more appearances this year at the farmers tables. Ellis Family Farm had these sweet, seedless, organic, Canadice along with white, seedless, Himrods on their tables.

You have a unique chance to test the soil in your garden at The Talking Farm’s Soil Class! The public is now concerned about water but our soil determines the health of your plants and your produce. The class is taught by a leading soil scientist in Chicago and includes a testing kit and soil analysis of your own soil from your garden. The class takes place September 17th. Reserve a spot here.
