Happy Spring! Finally we are at that green time of year which started with ramps and now we will see asparagus at the markets. For me, there is nothing better than grilled asparagus with the perfume of tarragon butter. The Green City Outdoor Market and the 41st Evanston Outdoor Farmers Market opens tomorrow. A couple of great newsletters to stay on top of what’s in season, recipes and just are a delight to read, are Prairie Fruit Farms, Brockman Family Farms and the 61st Market.

New!!! Just added: Weekend at White Pines Floristic Survey 5/20-5/22 QuadrUnicornucopia 5/20  Chicago Market BBQ Pop-Up 5/21   Heal The Planet Farm Festival at Locavore Farm Grant Park, IL 6/4

Go and pick up a Country Financial market bag at the opening of the Daley Plaza farmers market on May 12th.  The bag is really sturdy, Country Financial holds a design contest and gives scholarships to the winning students and finally it is always a unique, beautiful design.

Master Butcher Rob Levitt was busy at Cochon 555 this year. The event had a carnival-like atmosphere with mini-events happening within the larger event like pop-up ramen and pop-up Bang Bang pie. Chef Sarah Grueneberg and her merry crew from Monteverde won with a really creative display of pork dishes based on Chicago neighborhoods. The main focus of the event was stronger than ever on supporting and helping farmers raise heritage breed pigs. Piggy-Bank.org was the recipient of all this good-will and the farmers who provided the pigs were in attendance.

I highlight some of the larger farmers markets in the local calendar but I am happy to see that more mainstream media outlets are now publishing calendars of the farmers markets, like this comprehensive one from the Redeye. For a quick weekend getaway, farm dinners can be really fun for the whole family. They are a chance to visit with baby goats, see chickens and pigs, and eat uber local right at the farm. Some of the farm dinners in the area, Prairie Fruit Farms (Champaign), Slagel Family Farm, and Mint Creek Farm. You can have a farm dinner right in Chicago at Local Foods, their first dinner up is Bare Knuckle Farms on 5/19

Local food resources for classes, workshops and lots of fun: Garfield Park Conservatory, Morton Arboretum, Peterson Garden Project, Advocates for Urban Agriculture, the Illinois Stewardship Alliance, the Plant Chicago and the Talking Farm, of course there are many more.

Check it all out on the Local Monthly Calendar, farmers markets, farm dinners, good food and good times including the opening of the Green City and Evanston markets tomorrow, the AUA Spring Gathering, Seedling Sales at the Talking Farm in Skokie and more!
