Welcome 2016! There are many more local options than there used to be that is for sure. The Sugar Beet Coop opened in Oak Park, Local Foods opened in Lincoln Park, there is now the Band of Farmers, Chicagoland CSA Coalition and Chicago Market is close to having a bricks and mortar location (you can sign up and be an owner here) Then there are the ones that lead the way, like the Green Grocer and the Dill Pickle Coop , which if you are in the neighborhood stop in and check them out. The important thing is be particular about how your fruit and vegetables are sourced, stop by the winter farmers markets as well as any of our local artisan friends like Floriole Cafe and Bakery, Sauce and Bread Kitchen, Smack Dab Chicago, Baker Miller, Bang Bang Pie and others like them!

It may be cold outside but there is lots to do inside. A new award-winning documentary, Old Fashioned, on Wisconsin supper clubs created by Chicago resident and Wisconsin native Holly L. De Ruyter will have its Chicago premiere at the Gene Siskel Film Center on January 23 (at 7:45 pm) and 28 (at 6:00 pm), 2016. Director Holly L. De Ruyter will be in attendance for a Question and Answer with the audience after both screenings. Tickets are now on sale at the Gene Siskel Film Center box office.

The Cider Summit is coming to Chicago on Saturday February 27. The owners and cidermakers will be on hand to inform and guide guests through the samplings which will be available in 4-ounce portions.  Cider Summit will feature over 140 ciders including regional favorites and international classics from countries such as England, Scotland, France, and Spain.  The event will also feature specially selected food pairings, a new Cider Cocktail Lounge hosted by The Northman and Woodford Reserve, and an event store featuring Cider Summit t-shirts and other merchandise. Another new feature at the 2016 event will be the Fruit Cider Challenge sponsored by Oregon Fruit Products.  Several of our participating cideries will produce pilot batches specifically for the event.  Consumers will vote for their favorite during the festival with the winner of the first annual Fruit Cider Challenge announced at the conclusion of the event.

If you are interested in gaining some knowledge in gardening, cooking, urban farming and more there are organizations like the Peterson Garden Project, the Garfield Park Conservatory, Angelic Organics Learning Center and the Land Connection that offers small, long classes, seminars and courses to beef up your sustainable repetoir.

Lots events coming up during the winter months, of course, the huge Good Food Festival in March, but there will be some chili contests that pop-up and some fests of one kind or another that pop-up this month and next. Get to an artisanal mezcal mexican dinner at the Chicago Literacy Center January 22. Lots of all things maple syrup going on in Brown County Indiana the first 2 weeks of March. The calendar will be updated during the month and the new events highlighted in red. For game nostalgia of any kind, Punch Bowl Social has opened in Schaumburg and offers local gastro pub food as well.
