The summer is flying by, take advantage of every beautiful day and get outdoors, even if it is only for 5 minutes. Appreciate the abundance of produce on the tables for the next few months at the farmers markets. We are fortunate there are so many farmers markets in Chicago this time of year. I have selected some of the larger ones for the calendar and Rob includes more on his “What’s In Season”. If you have a favorite farmers market that you would like included in the calendar, let me know in the comments below.

Look for new events added since publication in red!

Local Foods opened last week. Stop by and check it out. It’s located at Willow and Elston Streets. There is plenty of parking and they source from many of the farmers, River Valley Kitchens, Kinnikinnick Farms and Prairie Fruit Farms that are at the outdoor farmers markets. The number one reason to check the store out is that Rob Levitt and his butcher shop, The Butcher and Larder is now a part of the store. So now, not only can you source meat free of antibiotics and locally sourced and amazing sausage and charcuterie but you can buy vegetables, fruit, milk, eggs, cheese, grains and bread at the store as well. The number two reason is their cafe, Stock, headed by the talented Chef Abra Behrens, who is a farmer as well as chef and will be serving one of a kind daily blue plate specials.

The Fountainhead has now opened a “to go” market, Fountainhead Market where you can get Chef Cleetus Friedman’s food to go, hard to find whiskies and find one of a kind condiments. Don’t forget our friends at the Green Grocer as well!

Taste of Chicago has started and runs through Sunday July 12, Prairie Fruit Farms has a Dinner on The Farm this Saturday July 11 with New Holland Brewing and Chef Cleetus Friedman of Fountainhead.   The Green City Market BBQ is Thursday July 16   Slagel Farms has their next farm dinner July 18, headed by Chef Matt Troost of Three Aces and Chef Mike Galen of The Bedford and Carriage House. AUA Summer Soiree Grown In Chicago 7/23, The 8th Annual Angelic Organics Peak Harvest dinner is July 25. The grand opening of The Sugar Beet Coop is July 31.
