The Local Calendar 12/18/13 Last Green City Market Of The Year, Art And Appetite Show And More
This coming weekend will be the last winter markets of the year. Farmers, market hands and managers need a break too. So most will be off the weekend after the Christmas holiday. Take advantage and buy some of those perishable items like goat cheese at Green City on Saturday. The Prairie Fruit Farms goats (picture by Prairie Fruit Farms) are all dressed up for the holidays and are welcoming you to the farm open house today from 3-5pm. If you can’t make it to Champaign then get to the Green City Market on Saturday at the Notebaert museum to see the Prairie Fruit folk and the other farmers who get up mighty early in order to get their wares to the market.
Looking for some ideas for friends, relatives, yourself in exploring Chicago over the holidays? Then get to the Art and Appetite show at the Art Institute. This Rockwell picture of the abundance of Thanksgiving welcomes you at the beginning of the show. For foodies, farmies, foragers and even if you”re not any of those, the show has a lot of nooks and crannies to explore and in pictorial form shows the history of food production in the U.S. From the abundance of oysters at the beginning of the 19th century, to prohibition, the social dynamics of food, old menus, ads for food and more. The show is 4 years in the making so there are more layers to it than meets the eye. Some of your favorite Chicago chefs have aligned with a particular picture in the show and contributed recipes to an online cookbook, walk through the show and match the chef to the painting. The show closes January 27 so don’t delay.
The city is dressed up for the holidays including buildings like the Merchandise Mart. The cold weather and snow truly add to that holiday feeling. The calendar for 2014 has already started including the 10th anniversary of the Good Food Festival. Need ideas for where to shop for local produce and provisions check out the where to source local guide. Get to the Hideout this weekend for the Last Chance Holiday Sale, LUSH Wine and Spirits Division on Sunday, the Art Institute for the Art and Appetite show and the last Green City Market of 2013. Check out the weeks ahead!
