The Local Calendar 11/27/13 Happy Thanksgiving Most Markets Closed Shop Local This Weekend
Turkey day is tomorrow and a time to enjoy great food and give thanks for all it takes to produce it! Farmers and the people that run the markets need a break every now and then too! So in Chicago, at least, all of the farmers markets are closed this weekend. If you happen to know of one that is open, leave a comment below.
As we move into winter and the amount of green produce dwindles, microgreens which are grown indoors offer a vibrant, healthy alternative. Chicago Indoor Garden, The Urban Canopy and the Plant offer their greens at some of the local markets and you can have free tastes to see what you think! I look at them as green vitamins, they have an aboslutely incredible, nutrional punch and they add a burst of flavor to salads, sandwiches, omelets and more, which is why so many of the Chicago chefs utilize them in their dishes.
Our Where To Source Local Guide below and restaurants like The Local Root, who have a map showing you where some of their ingredients are sourced from, are still sourcing local during the winter time. So this week is relatively quiet but the December calendar is chock full of events, so check it out below. The event calendar has already started for 2014. Whiskyfest Chicago early bird tickets have sold out and Chicago Gourmet 2014 tickets go on sale at 12am Friday!! Most of the establishments in our WTSLG are open Saturday!
