The devastation from the recent tornadoes reminds us all how easy all that we have built in our lives can be destroyed in an instant. The destruction in towns across Illinois, Indiana, and other Midwestern states was horrendous to view. Not as much coverage though dealt with the farmers affected between the towns. Many Midwestern farmers are too feeling the effects of the ravages that nature can put out. Right here in Illinois an EF-4 tornado struck Washington County. This storm had winds of 166-200 mph and obliterated farms and livestock.

The Farmers’ Guide to Disaster Assistance written by attorneys at Farmers Legal Action Group (FLAG) explains FEMA assistance, federal crop insurance, USDA’s Non-Insured Crop Disaster Assistance Program and Emergency Loans from USDA’s Farm Service Agency. FLAG also offers guides and updates about federal risk management and disaster programs that can help protect your farm business and your family against natural disasters. When farms are hit by disaster, documenting losses is an important first step in getting assistance. RAFI-USA put together a guide to help.
