The Local Calendar 11/20/13 Glenwood Market, The Food Film Festival, Hazzard Free Farm

November 20, 2013 at 10:40 am

There continues to be quite a variety of produce on the tables at the farmers market like Green City Market as well as canned and fermented vegetables from producers like Bushel & Peck’s.  Even though it can be tempting and sometimes highly convenient to just one stop shop at Whole Foods or Mariano’s, Gareth Proctor of Endless Greens, pointed out at the NU Sustainable Food Talk on Urban Ag Monday, that greens and most vegetables lose 50% of their nutritional value within 48 hours of being harvested. Most farmers at the markets, harvest their produce 48-24 hours before coming to the market.

The NU Sustainable Food Talks are held once a month in Evanston and Mondays talk on Urban Ag in Chicagoland included Wendy Aeschlimann, Board Member of The Talking Farm, Dave Snyder, the Farm manager of Farmworks and a Board Member of the Chicago Rarities Orchard Project and Gareth Proctor of Endless Greens. What I took away from the talk is that as Dave Snyder described, Chicago urban ag is really a network of tiny home plots, rooftop gardens and 1-2 acre farms within the city. The Talking Farm is breaking new ground in trying to encourage Skokie to adopt zoning ordinances, which the city of Chicago has in place already,  that will allow a farm, like Howard St., to sell product grown on their farm in Skokie . Gareth Proctor of Endless Greens is growing food on the land of his house in Evanston as well as consulting and instructing people on sustainable growing and energy practices like collecting rain water, heating through solar power and composting. Farmworks promotes social justice by employing and training personnel who have been previously convicted and have a really hard time getting a job. As farm manager, Dave Snyder said, the farm is about postive changes every day and Dave just likes getting people excited about growing vegetables.

Meanwhile, with Thanksgiving a week away,  if you still need to supplement your Thanksgivng meal, the Green Grocer, Sauce and Bread Kitchen and Bang Bang Pie Shop all have pies, desserts and side dishes you can buy. This week the Food Film Festival rolls into town, it includes a focus on farm to film to table on Saturday night, and at the midday Saturday event, Chicago’s David Hammond has a short film shown, You Should Really Eat This. Kate Gross has organized a Farmstead Holiday party at Hazzard Free Farm in Pecatonica, Prairie Fruit Farm and Creamery has a pre-Thanksgiving open house in Champaign this afternoon, the Glenwood Holiday market takes place again on Sunday, the first Faith In Place winter market takes place in Glenview, the local calendar never stops, on to the week ahead!
