chadnicholsAngelicTheFarmLetMeDecide_SQ-Main-300x250           Each farmers market has its own unique characteristics, the Green City Market besides it high standards for how the products are treated and raised, has farmers like Green Acres that only are found at that market. However, no matter how much I may like Green City or the Daley Center market, there is nothing like my “home” market, the market closest to me, that I can bike to, that is small but the same vendors are always there, like Chad from Nichols, the cucumber guy, slinging his cucumbers (okay, they are sour apples today) or Danny from the cheese booth. There is nothing like gettting to a farm dinner during the summer season. Angelic Organics, a biodynamic community supported agriculture farm, that has been growing vegetables and herbs for households since 1991 had their annual farm dinner Saturday for their Learning Center that since their humble beginnings, they’ve become a regional leader helping urban and rural people build local food systems. Each year through their three main initiatives they engage more than 4,000 individuals.

The next public hearing to discuss labeling GE foods in Illinois is today in Carbondale. The outcome of these hearings will determine whether Genetically Engineered foods are labeled in Illinois. This is your chance to show Illinois law-makers that you urgently demand transparent food labeling! Food and Water Watch Illinois is keeping you abreast of the situation and supplying you action items, so you can do something to support the bill.

Food Day Chicago (Oct. 24) has now moved on to tomatoes for their Eat Real Chicago produce of the month. The deadline for applications to participate in the collective Food Day event at Daley Plaza is August 15th. The Talking Farm in Evanston continues to grow it farms and programs. Want to become a certified urban farm hand? The Talking Farm now has a program where you can join to do just that! The Local Calendar never stops, with the appearance of tomatoes, eggplant, apples and peaches we are a little past the peak of the harvest season. I’m just saying lots of vegetables leads to lots of prep and cutting for which you need sharp knives. Chicago - Argyle Night Market kicks off today – Argyle and Broadway 5pm – 9pm weekly through September 5th

Chicago - Eli’s Cheesecake & Wright College’s Farmer Markets  7am!  Fresh fruits and vegetables from Nichol’s Farm and the Chicago High School of Agricultural Sciences, as well as hand crafts, flowers. FREE Continental Breakfast from 7am – 9am with $5 market purchase. Lunch on the Grill will be served from 11am – 1pm.  FREE Sustainable Agriculture Lecture at 1:00p.m. 

Chicago - Daley Center Farmers Market - Market will run May 16th through October 31. The Urban Canopy sells their microgreens and wheat grass made with a hand crank!

Chicago – Uptown Market Uptown Farmers’ Market is year round. Every Thursday from 7-1 inside Weiss Memorial Hospital or in the parking lot during the warmer months. 4646 N Marine Drive This is an appropriate day to stock up on Spark of the Heart Soups

Marine Drive 7:30pm – 11:30pm Set on top of the hospital’s parking garage, the farm will provide a beautiful and appropriate backdrop for people interested in urban agriculture to find opportunities to get involved, make new connections, and enjoy local eats, drinks, and entertainment as the sun goes down and the (3 or 4 visible) stars come out.  Highlights will include a screening of the widely acclaimed documentary film Urban Roots, tours of the rooftop farm provided by Loud Grade Produce Squad (LGPS), savory morsels from Big Delicious Planet (with veggies from its onsite organic garden), and libations from local breweries (TBA).

Chicago – Elmwood Park – An Evening At The Garden - Friends of Kilbourn Park Organic Greenhouse 3501 North Kilbourn 6-8pm It’s their 2nd annual evening of eating, drinking, bidding, chatting and bopping to good tunes in the garden, and all of it in the name of the Organic Greenhouse’s community programming and development. They’ll have appetizers, sweets and sodas made with fresh ingredients harvested straight from their garden.
