Local Calendar 4/17/13 Ramps For Sale Sightings, 2 Weeks Until the Outdoor Markets!

By
April 17, 2013 at 4:29 am

Although it feels like spring produce will never arrive at the markets, there have been some ramp sightings recently. Chief Beet Rob Gardner rounds up everything that you can find locally and what’s in season. Tim Burton of Burton’s Maplewood Farm was at Publican Quality Meats selling ramps last Monday, so there may be the elusive spring ramp and the start of spring produce at the markets this weekend. Checkout Chicago Serious Eats for 6 places that you can eat ramps right now. It is only 2 weeks until the Green City Market goes outside!! Once the markets move outside, spring vegetables will start appearing on the tables!

Our friend Dave Nells of Sharpening By Dave is at the Green City Market and other locations throughout Chicagoland. His schedule is here. If you want to eat local, you need to have sharp knives to prepare all the produce!!  Let Dave know that you read about him in the Local Beet and you will get one dollar off each knife sharpened!!!

Farm dinners are starting earlier this year.  We have listed dinners we are aware of so far, with some of the leading sustainable farmers in the area, Mint Creek FarmPrairie Fruit Farms and Slagel Family Farms. The dinners book up pretty quickly so time to get a-scheduling!

We try to keep up on events but miss some, some sites to check out for further detail on sustainable food/urban ag are the Illinois Stewardship Alliance (get their policy updates here) out of Springfield and the Advocates for Urban Agriculture here in Chicago as well as WeFarmAmerica which has tons of weekly events.  The Peterson Garden Project (Annual Plant Sale & Bake Sale 5/10-5/12) has lots of information and workshops for the urban gardner, Now on to the very busy week ahead including the food pow wow tonight organized by the incredible gals at Food Tank on “How to Change the Food System”.
