Mark your calendar, March 13 is Local Foods Awareness Day hosted by the Illinois Stewardship Alliance, you can learn how to advocate for local food directly with your legislators at the Capitol in Springfield!! If you want a short road trip, check out the National Maple Syrup Festival hosted by Burton’s Maplewood Farm. The first Farm Dinner of the season is already on the calendar, March 23 at Mint Creek Farm. Check the Local Beet for more dinners to come, this calendar gets updated regularly!! So much going on for the urban aggie this weekend with the Midwest Urban Farms Summit at The Plant, and of course only a week away from the Good Food Festival, Rob Gardner covered it here, the agenda and workshops are stronger than ever.
We try to keep up on events but miss some, some sites to check out for further detail on sustainable food/urban ag are the Illinois Stewardship Alliance out of Springfield and the Advocates for Urban Agriculture here in Chicago as well as WeFarmAmerica which has tons of weekly events. The Peterson Garden Project has lots of information and workshops for the urban gardner, Matt Kirouac described their Victory Garden they will showcase at The Chicago Flower and Garden Show. Now on to the busy week ahead for the urban aggie and the local foodie.

Our cooks are Edzo’s Eddie Lakin, Drew from Flesh for Food, Roots & Culture’s Eric May, Ted Cox, Sree Nair, Nancy Baumel, and Perry Kim. Bread donated by Publican Quality Meats and La Farine Bakery. Our DJ is Kenn Goodman. This week only we’re asking for a suggested contribution of $10; donate at that level you’ll get to take home a handmade ceramic bowl courtesy of Association House. But, never fear, we’ll still take pay-what-you-can donations as well.

Kempton, Il – Mint Creek Farm Tour and Dinner – 3pm : Meet the tour group at Greenhouse Bed and Breakfast and join farmer Harry Carr for a tour of Mint Creek Farm. There will be plenty of time to visit all the animals living on the 200+ acre farm including cows, chickens, pigs, sheep and goats. Be sure to dress appropriately for the weather.
