Back for its third year, the 2012 Chicago Food Film Festival looks to be a doozy! The festival this year has a very intriguing lineup that left me trying to figure out, which ones were a priority, because frankly, they all sound great:  A Farm to Film to Table night, Fish Fry Friday, An Afternoon Avocado Takedown and Single Malt Whisky: The Islay 8 & Festival Awards. They are  taking place this Thursday November 15 through Saturday November 17 at Kendall College. The festival includes 20+ films in all, 5 of them world premiers. Tickets for most of the events sold out last year so do not dawdle if you are thinking about attending!

This is no ordinary food event, a combination of award winning short films centered on food, with an interaction with the players and the food in the viewing room and afterwords. The festival has the whimsicality of Baconfest, the intimacy of a farm dinner, and no ordinary food and beverage pairings. Be it oysters from the lowcountry for last year’s oyster roast or Art Jackson’s food from Pleasant House Bakery(Art returns this year at Saturday night’s event to feed the audience). I think the creativity in the films brings out an extra dimension in the food that is served. When it comes down to it, it is all about story telling, and as Seth Unger, the Executive Producer of the festival describes it, amazing moments in time.

For all those Local Beeters, on Thursday night, farmer Harry Carr of Mint Creek Farm will be featured in a short film produced by  StoryBuzzMedia, a group that includes Becky Liscum, the Publisher of Edible Chicago magazine. Fries & Ice Cream, a film highlighting one of the signature dishes of Chef Philip Foss of El Ideas will be shown as well as his inventive food!! Frei Brothers Reserve is the signature beverage of the night and local brewer Begyle Brewing will be serving their latest concoction. Are you getting the hint? There is a lot more to the festival than meets the quick eye!

The festival wraps up Saturday with the Chicago premier of Whisky:The Islay Edition. If you can’t travel to the Isle of Islay, Islay comes to you, the evening will include tasting of whiskies from all 8 distilleries on the Isle. Art Jackson’s Pleasant House food among others, and of course, the awards given among the 20 films included in the 3 days.

If those 2 nights are not enough there is what sounds to be a humongous Milwaukee fish fry and films on Friday night and an avocado adventure, Edible Adventure #006: Chicavo! Featuring Matt Timm’s Avocado Takedown.  It includes 20 different avocado dishes along with films like Mozzarella, Inc. The afternoon includes 20 amateur chefs competing for cash prizes. I think this afternoon, probably sounds the most intriguing of them all.

George Motz, of Burger GPS(yes, you heard it right, a Burger GPS app), Travel Channel Host and documentary filmaker Hamburger America along with Harry Hawk are the founders of the festival. I could go on and on about the unusual details that the producers include to make this such a unique event but if you are curious go to the links and nose around, you will like what you find!!!!
