Local Calendar 7/4/12 Happy and Hot Fourth!

Hot off the press, (pun intended) Edible Chicago Summer 2012 Issue 17 is being delivered this week throughout Chicagoland as you read this. Edible puts the “A” in artisanal as owners, Becky Liscum, Publisher, and Ann Flood, Editor, hand deliver the thousands of magazines.  You can check the website here, for delivery points, but I suggest calling ahead, because the magazines go, like “hot cakes” (pun intended). The seasonal magazine comes out quarterly, and is celebrating its 4th anniversary this summer. Happy Birthday Edible Chicago!!! Summer’s cover of red hot chili peppers sums up what we are all going through right now, beating the heat, be it Ann and Becky delivering the magazines or the many farmers, and help who are outside working the markets, putting the tents up, standing at the booths for hours and then breaking them down.

I thought the other picture of sunflowers was rather appropriate given that they are a plant that thrives in heat and little water. Think “sunflower” when you are outside and try to thrive!!!

For the Fourth, a salad idea taking advantage on what the markets have to offer,  is a traditional potato salad with a twist, a red, white and blue potato salad, using Peruvian blue potatoes, potatoes that are red on the inside and some of the summer white potatoes which I found big bins of at the Nichols Farm booth. Nichols had signs selling red, white and blue potatoes as well as Green Acres Farm.

Hopefully you are reading this with a nice big glass of water, iced tea, or a local Chicago craft beer, even better. The summer has only just started, woo hoo!!!

As usual if you are wondering what markets are near you, check the Local Beet market locator here, and if you are finding it too hard to get to the markets and want to join a CSA, the Local Beet CSA guide is here. On to the weeks ahead!!
