Think Its Too Warm for an Indoor Market? – Hines VA Hospital Putting on One Last Market – Thursday April 12

April 11, 2012 at 4:33 pm

One of our favorite low-key area farmer markets is the one put on at the Hines VA (Veteran’s Administration) Hospital in what they call Hines, Illinois but most people would call Maywood–Roosevelt near 1st Avenue.  The un-official motto for this market is veterans for veterans, with Vietnam Veteran Jim Vitalo marshalling the troops to supply this vast complex with local foods.  Jim, of course is the vinegar guy.  Denny has his honey.  Jimmy Hardin, provides Michigan fruits and vegetables.  My lovely wife, not a veteran, sells the Tomato Mountain.

The Hines farmer’s market meets during the season, weekly, on Thursdays.  During the winter they met less than weekly, but also on Thursdays.  They will meet one last time, indoors, this Thursday, April 12.  Word on the street, there will be asparagus. If you go, say hi to that other Cookbook Addict.
