Sawyer Garden Market

Over the 4th of July weekend, my wife and I took our 2nd annual trip to Harbor Country, Michigan.  We needed an umbrella for the beach, and we were told to check out the Sawyer Garden Center. Unfortunately, they didn’t have what we needed, but we found out that they do have local produce.

In plentiful supply were locally sourced blueberries, squash, cantaloupe, currants, red and black raspberries, and green beans. We took home some black raspberries which was made into ice cream by my wife. We also bought green beans and cantaloupe.

During our short vacation we stayed at the wonderful Harbert House Bed and Breakfast, run by former Chicago caterer Nancy Watson. Her breakfasts will make you skip lunch and comprise locally sourced ingredients. Hors d’ oeuvres are served everyday at 5 pm and include a glass (or two) of local wine.

If you’re going a little more north of Harbor Country, check out Wendy Aeschlimann’s write up on local foods in Western Michigan.

You can also check out the rest of my pictures of the Sawyer Garden Center at Flickr.
