If you are an NIU Alumnus, here is an opportunity to network and taste a vast array of Michigan-grown and -produced wines. The tasting is coordinated by Fresh Coast Distributors and will take place at House Red in Forest Park tomorrow, June 3rd, from 7 to 9 pm.

The following four wineries will be represented:

Chateau Chantal, Traverse City, MI - Established in 1983 when cherry orchards were replaced with grafted vinifera grape vines, this breathtaking winery and inn is located on the 45th parallel on Old Mission Peninsula where wine grapes thrive in the unique micro-climate. Wines poured: ’08 Chardonnay, ’07 Malbec

Domaine Berrien, Berrien Springs, MI – Now in their 32nd year, these estate vineyards lie where the sandy soils, high elevation, latitude and a climate moderated by Lake Michigan breezes create the perfect growing site for winemaker Wally Mauer to practice his passion for wine. Wines poured: ’08 Pinot Grigio, ’07 Pinot Noir

Fenn Valley Vineyards, Fennville, MI – Recently featured at a White House dinner, Fenn Valley’s Ice Wine is one of the many wines made at this small family owned vineyard and winery that was born out of a fascination with the art of growing premium grapes and making fine wines. Wines poured: Semi-Dry Riesling, Cappriccio (red blend), Ice Wine

Peninsula Cellars, Traverse City, MI – Recently lauded in the NY Times and Time Magazine for their exceptional wines grown on the coveted hills of Old Mission Peninsula, the Kroupa family’s philosophy toward wine making is minimalist, allowing the regional expression of the fruit to shine through. Wines poured: ’07 Dry Riesling, ’07 Cabernet Franc

Domaine Berrien winemaker Wally Mauer and Marie-Chantal Dalese from Chateau Chantal will be there to interact with guests and answer questions. What’s also special about this tasting is that the wineries are located in vastly different parts of Western Michigan. For example, Fenn Valley, located in Central Western Michigan (near Saugatuck), has lush green vineyards. Domaine Berrien, located in a hilly part of Southwest Michigan, specializes in red wines, and Chateau Chantal and Peninsula Cellars grapes are grown in the much-lauded, but colder climate of Northwest Michigan. Taste these wines and see if you can tell the difference! But more than that, be the first of your friends to taste this unique collection of local wines.
