As we have been reporting on the Local Beet, farmer’s markets are starting to roll.  Green City Market goes outdoors on Wednesday, May 12 with a demo from star Chef Philip Foss and some neat new vendors.  Still, the official kickoff of the City of Chicago markets occurs a day later at Daley Plaza.   The necessary speeches will begin at 1045, but the asparagus buying will commence much earlier.

The key event Thursday will be the unveiling of Country Financial’s third Reusable Bag Design Contest.  Chicago Public School students participated in the contest and the winner will receive a $1,000 scholarship in addition to having his or her design displayed on 10,000 reusable shopping bags that will be distributed at farmers markets throughout the city this summer.  Two runners-up will each receive a $500 scholarship.  This year’s finalists are Gargi Vaghmare and Michelle Arellano, both of Mather High School, and Christie Auyeung of Lincoln Park High School.

In conclusion, you can show your support for the City’s markets, buy fresh food, thank Country Financial for their sponsorship, and cheer on some successful artistic kids.  My guess is you might also leave with a nice bag too.
