Minhas does a nice job with the tour, and you'll definitely get some Huber on tap (Huber Bock is the best beer Minhas produces, based on what I sampled). While you're there, visit the picturesque downtown, and get some Limburger cheese at Baumgartner's Cheese Store and Tavern, at 1023 16th Avenue. Monroe is only place in the Western Hemisphere that produces Limburger cheese.

Great article about Minhas and thanks also to Tom for the link about Rhinelander beer. Glad to see that old label given a new life.

Here in Illinois, at least in the Chicago area, Minhas is no longer shipping kegs of any Huber products (Huber, Huber Bock, etc.). I spoke to the sales manager at Glunz Beers, the distributor, who informed me we can only get Huber in bottles. Before they closed recently, Southport City Saloon had a private label Huber beer on tap and it was one of the best beers in the city.

We are planning to tour Minhas Brewery in the next few weeks and we're looking forward to seeing what's going on. Hopefully I can get Huber on tap in the tasting room!

Huber Bock, which, of course, Minhas inherited from the previous owners, is a pretty decent example of the style, although I don't think it's quite as rich in flavor as, say, Schell's Bock. But these days, Minhas seems to putting more emphasis on its own beers rather than the older Huber brands. I'm guessing based on the flavors that Minhas' Billy Bock is the same as Huber Bock; both have a slightly grainy quality to the caramel maltiness that detracts a little from the flavor, IMHO.

You barely mention their bock beer, but Huber Bock is as good an American Bock as any brewed here. It is excellent. And can be bought as cheap as eight dollars a twelve pack.

If you're a fan of Rhinelander, you might find this link interesting:
http://www.rhinelanderdailynews.com/articles/2009/10/02/news/doc4ac4ccadce9ef138234782.txt
Ravi's sister, Manjit Minhas, founded a liquor business with her brother while they were still in their teens (but just barely of drinking age in Alberta). That provided the funds that eventually allowed Ravi to purchase the Joseph Huber Brewery. Manjit and a friend have plans to build a new brewery in Rhinelander and reintroduce Rhinelander Beer, using an early recipe. But you may have to wait 'til 2014 for it.

Thanks for this interesting article. I appreciated the history of the brewery that you included. I have had some of Minhas beers and can state that they are not impressive. Of anything I had to drink, I prefer their root beer, however, it doesn't compare to Silver Creek's Blonde rootbeer. I look forward to reading your future articles.
