Bloggin’ My CSA: The Eighth Box
A little more waste crept in with delivery seven. The celery, which has a flavor and aggressiveness far superior to watery supermarket celery, had a very short shelf life. I used some, but in a couple days, it was dead. The rest of the box went down as expected. The tomatoes were perfect and we got about six servings of roasted cauliflower out of that huge head.
This week I’ve gotta sign up for a Fall/Winter CSA.
Delivery 8 of 10 is here and it’s chock-full of good stuff.
What’s in there?
- Potatoes I’m long on potatoes and I’m getting longer.
- Parsley: Herbs are always welcome.
- Tomatoes
- Peppers. Bell peppers. Eh. Maybe I’ll roast them and pack them in vinegar like the last batch.
- Radishes will be eaten with butter and fresh-baked bread.
- Green cabbage A picture-perfect head of cabbage that oddly reminded me of Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors.
- Pears They’re tiny and I hope they’re tasty.
- Carrots
- Mystery Greens! The newsletter doesn’t say what this is. See below for a pic. At first glance I thought dandelion but they’re not that bitter. Maybe mizuna?
Anyone have an idea?

I am pretty sure that’s mizuna.
I think you might be right, but the leaves seem much broader than most Mizuna I’ve used. Also, it’s not that bitter. Either way, I might do a salad with it and the pears, inspired by this:

Looks like lambsquarter?
Michael,
Braised celery is really delicious side dish. I cover it with flavorful chicken stock and a buttered piece of parchment. At the end, when it’s tender, I flavor the braising liquid with butter and a bit of tarragon vinegar, which pairs really nicely with celery. I have to pick up some of Vicki’s red heirloom celery on Saturday.
That looks like the box I got from Simply Wisconsin last week. The pears tasted so good – small, but so sweet and juicy.
That is 100% for sure mizuna. It’s a Japanese green gaining momentum in American cuisine.
I posted about my favorite bell pepper recipe here http://littlelocavores.blogspot.com/ great condiment/side dish/sauce.
