North Center Finds

If you see a bunch of 5 and 6 year old’s wearing Cardinals jerseys in Welles Park, you’ll probably spot me in the spectator seats. Thor started playing t-ball there and so twice a week we’re hauling mitt, bat and cleats up to North Center.

I’ve been pleasantly surprised by the food offerings in the area these days. I’m a frequent visitor to Julius Meinl, while not local, it’s a heck of a lot better than Starbucks. I blogged here recently about the lovely Brown Trout, with it’s amazing kids menu. Now, it’s time to highlight the nicest hot dog stand in Chicago, Drew’s Eatery.

Grass-fed hot dogs and Sloppy Drew’s, house-fried potato chips, Trader’s Point ice cream are a few of the highlights. The charming Drew has been there both times I have gone. He seems like a generous guy, even sponsoring the very dangerous Dodgers, which beat our Cardinals 25-6. A recycling station sits next to the garbage reducing the restaurant’s waste. Adorably outfitted, the space just oozes kid-friendly.

As last week’s snack mom, I contributed to the sustainable food options last Monday. River Valley Ranch popcorn coated with Spice House cheddar powder and a delightful strawberry lemonade were the team’s treat for a hard-fought tie with the Phillies.
