We have news on SB99, a bill introduced by Senator Heather Steans to amend the Illinois Environmental Protection Act in such a way that would make it easier for commercial composting facilities to set up operations in Illinois. It passed the Senate on April 2 after a third reading and arrived at the House on April 3 being placed on the calendar for first reading.

Among people in the know, there is some concern that the bill will get waylaid in the House. In the past, composting has had some powerful opponents in that chamber. Thus far, Representative Harry Osterman has taken up the charge, signing on as the chief House sponsor. Accordingly, this is the time to contact your representative to express your support for the legislation. If you don’t know who your representative is, simply search the Illinois State Board of Elections and then call, email or write your rep to ask him to either sign on a s a sponsor or simply vote for this important change.
